Banian (َUrdu & Pashto بانیاں) is a town, and one of twenty union councils in Battagram District in the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa of Pakistan.[1] The place was named by Bania (caste) of Gujjars, while they formerly ruled the Gurjara Pratihara Kingdom for centuries. It is located at 34°36'30N 73°3'15E and has an altitude of 1287 metres (4225 feet).[2]

Union Council Banian is situated in the Tikri or Tikrai valley of Battagram district. Most inhabitants of UC Banian are Swati Pakhtuns by race. Three sub-castes of Swati Pakhtun tribe, namely, Malkaal (ملکال), Naror (نروڑ) and Ashror (اشروڑ) are the main population of the Union Council Banian. There are a very few Syeds and Gujjars also living in a scattered form. The only language spoken is Pashto (of the hard dialect i.e. kh).

The Banian village of the Union Council is the resting place of Maulana Abdul Mateen Hazarvi who was a major contributor to the movement of the affiliation of Banian (former tribal area) with Pakistan. The major places of Union Council Banian are Bandigo, Faqirabad, Thaya, Thaya jadeed, Dagai, Kharari, Deedal, Khatoona, Achpora, Shalkhey, Tarnav, Jalalkot, Saeed Abad, Tangi/Jaba/Qaboola, Chohan, Smal-Maira, Sangar, Gana, Takia, and Bela Belagai.

Union Council Banian is adjacent to Neelishang, Kabul (Mansehra), Battagram, and Kuza Banda.

It takes 40 minutes to go from Battagram City to Banian via road.

1) Maulana Abdul Mateen Hazarvi: Molana Abdul Mateen Hazarvi was a scholar and writer. He received an Islamic education from Devband (India). His book, "Tareekh-e-Alhaq", is about the affiliation of the Battagram region with Pakistan.

2)Haji Faqeer Muhammad Khan: Haji Faqeer Muhammad Khan of village Bandigo is one of the senior politicians of distt. Battagram. He has been elected as a member of the National Assembly in the past and was federal minister for northern areas and Kashmir affairs in late 1978- 1979.

3)Maulvi Mohammad Yousuf: Molvi Mohammad Yousuf was the younger brother of Maulana Abdul Mateen Hazarvi. He contributed to the movement of annexation the Battagram region with Pakistan.

4)Muhammad Saeed: Muhammad Saeed is the son of Molana Abdul Mateen Hazarvi. He is current the EDO (Elementary & Secondary Education) of Distt: Battagram and was Ex-EDO of Distt: Shangla.

5) Haji Dost Muhammad Khan: Haji Dost Muhammad Khan was the brother of Haji Faqeer Muhammad Khan. He was his younger Brother. He was famous landlord and was experienced farmer of the area. He died 22nd of November 2010. May his soul rest in peace. (Aameen)

6) Muhammad Yousuf Khan Deedal: The former and the last Chairman of Union Council Banian (before the Naazim system was introduced by the former president Musharraf).
